En la misa del pasado domingo, el pastor mormón de East Carbon instó a la congregación a salir a votar y a participar en los caucus locales del 5 de marzo. No obstante, este llamado no fue suficiente para motivar a todos. Melinda, una seguidora de la iglesia, expresó su descontento:

“Yo no voto por el mal menor. Sólo voto a alguien que sé que está interesado en resolver los problemas y se compromete a hacerlo. Ese es el tipo de persona en la que confío. En este momento, no hay nadie a quien pueda votar”, dijo a RFI.

La Iglesia de Jesucristo de los Santos de los Últimos Días, conocida comúnmente como la Iglesia mormona, tiene un peso demográfico y económico significativo en Utah, lo que la convierte en un actor político de primer orden. Aunque sus dirigentes insisten en que la iglesia se mantiene neutral en la carrera presidencial, hace unas semanas enviaron una carta a sus fieles instándolos a participar en los caucus y a elegir, independientemente de cualquier partido, al candidato que haya demostrado su competencia, integridad y capacidad de servicio.
